"I am very honoured by this award. I believe that this recognition has been possible with the hard work of all those who have accompanied me on this journey since 10 March 1988, when I was elected in Casablanca, Morocco.

“This trophy is an invitation to do more for the development of African football and youth development of the continent,” these were the words of CAF President, Issa Hayatou moments after receiving the trophy for his induction into the African Sports Hall of Fame in the category of Best Leader for the year 2014.

The prize was handed over to him by Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Federation at the ceremony held on Monday, 9 March 2015 at the King Fahd Palace in Dakar.

The Secretary General of the Senegalese Ministry of Youth and Sport said the honour “recognizes the wealth of experience and magnify the greatness of a man and his talent”.

Also in attendance was the Chairman of the Malian Olympic Committee as well as CAF Executive Committee members namely Messrs. Amadou Diakite, Constant Omari and Tarek Bouchamaoui.

The African Sport Hall of Fame is for players (athletes, technicians, managers and personalities) who have made a decisive contribution to the development of sport in Africa.

It is an initiative of Jappo Sports and Entertainment, founders of the Africa International Sports Convention (CISA) which the ninth edition will take place from 11-15 March 2015 in Kigali, Rwanda. The maiden edition of the Convention was held in 2007 in Dakar, Senegal.

CAF President Hayatou was named an inductee at the eighth edition held in 2014 in Sal, Cape Verde, but could not make it to the ceremony due to his tight schedule

Previous inductees of the Best Leader category of the African Sport Hall of Fame include Lamine Diack, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
