The draw was enough for ‘Les Aigles’ to join Zambia into the knockout stage after finishing two points shy of the Chipolopolo’s seven. Fellow contenders Uganda could only manage a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in the other Group D clash in Rubavu, taking their tally to two points. Zimbabwe remains at the bottom with a point.
In Rubavu, Uganda left it late against Zimbabwe snatching the equalizer with virtually the last kick of the game to deny the Warriors victory.
William Manondo scored the Southern Africans first and only goal of the tourney on 49 minutes with a shot from close range.
Minutes after, it was Zimbabwe goalie Tatenda Mkuruva who stood between the Cranes and the equalizer with some superb saves including tipping out Franck Kalanda’s goalbound shot on 70 minutes.
With victory almost in the pocket of Zimbabwe, a loss of concentration during time added-on saw substitute Geofrey Serunkuma head home the equalizer on stoppage time.
Zambia will face Guinea for a place at the semis in Rubavu whilst Mali squares Tunisia in Kigali.
