As they prepare to face South Africa’s SuperSport United on Sunday, Gor Mahia are confident that they can break that duck and head coach Dylan Kerr is optimistic his side is well prepared to give it a shot.
The tactician says they have picked lessons from their CAF Champions League failure against Esperance where they lost 1-0 on aggregate and is convinced such mistakes will be a thing of the past. Gor created chance after chance especially in the first leg in Machakos, but failed to utilize the opportunities and were duly punished.
Kerr tactician has been working to polish his forward line to ensure they finish the tie in the first leg and make the return tie on April 17 a mere formality.
Despite Matsatsantsa having a torrid season in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), Kerr is not taking the match lightly and has warned his charges to ensure they give 100 percent. SuperSport are third from bottom in the PSL and they have not won in their last four league matches. Prior to the trip to Nairobi, they lost 1-0 to Polokwane City. The South Africans reached the play-off round after beating Angola’s Petro de Luanda 2-1 on aggregate.
“They reached the final of the CAF Confederation Cup last year and despite having an indifferent season in the league, they have a point to prove. We are taking them seriously. I have studied them and I know they are not easy opponents,” added the coach.
Gor Striker Meddie Kagere who has had a stint in South Africa in the past says they should expect a tough outing but he is confident the current set-up has what it takes to get a result.
“If you compare the PSL to the KPL, they are way ahead of us and their teams are tough. It will not be an easy match. But we have very good spirit in the team and everyone is motivated for the game. We are all looking forward to getting to the group stages,” Kagere said.
Kerr will have a full squad to choose his best 11 from. The only absentee is the injured duo of Karim Nizigiyimana and Wellington Ochieng while Ugandan left back Godfrey Walusimbi will not be part of the squad.
