Glasgow 2014 has today (Thursday, 10 July) outlined the breadth of its broadcast rights deals which ensures the Commonwealth Games will reach more people than ever before.

Notably, Glasgow 2014 becomes the first Commonwealth Games to be available to television viewers in all the 71 competing nations and territories.

The Games will also be available to huge numbers of people outside of the Commonwealth, including the United States and China, with a combined estimated global audience of more than 1.5 billion.

Glasgow 2014 can confirm that CBS Sports Network in the USA has secured first-run rights to broadcast daily highlights packages and TV Asia, on a delayed basis, will also transmit highlights to the large South Asian community based in the United States.

The Organising Committee has also reached agreement with Television Jamaica, to become the rights holder and broadcast co-ordinator for the vast Caribbean and Americas regions, ensuring that Commonwealth Games fans will see not only daily highlights, but also live action.

Glasgow 2014 has previously confirmed deals with the BBC for the UK, Network Ten for Australia, Sky Network Television for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, the Dubai-based TAJ TV for the sub-continent of India, SuperSport throughout Sub-Sahara Africa, the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union across Asia, , SABC for South Africa and CBC in Canada.

Many other rights holders have signed with broadcasters who will receive broadcast highlights packages produced each day of the Games. In total, Glasgow 2014 has more than 30 individual rights deals in place to cover the 71 Commonwealth nations and territories, excluding sub-licenses which account for a significant number of the additional broadcasters.

Glasgow 2014 will be the biggest multi-sport event Scotland has ever hosted and around 4,500 athletes from 71 nations and territories will take part in the Games with 17 sports on show across the 11 days of competition.

A global audience projection of more than 1.5 billion means a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Glasgow and Scotland to engage and inspire young people across the globe.

The sale of broadcast right packages worldwide is a part of Glasgow 2014’s commercial programme which aims to raise around £100million in revenue through licensing, merchandise, sponsorship and ticketing.

Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, David Grevemberg, said:

“Every nation and territory in the Commonwealth will have broadcast access to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and we are thrilled that such a truly global audience will have the opportunity to enjoy the world-class sporting events that will be on offer across 11 days of exciting competition, connecting millions of people to the best Commonwealth athletes going for gold and glory.”

Mike Hooper, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation, said:

“I’m delighted that the success of the television rights programme means every nation in the Commonwealth, and beyond, will be able to experience Glasgow 2014 for the first time. It means more people than ever will have the opportunity to support their team and join in the atmosphere of the Games.”
