The award serves to recognise a former sportsperson who has made a sustained positive contribution to community and or development via their actions and endeavours over an extended period of time. This recognition comes after an illustrious career in golf, accumulating over nine major championships, and at the age of 29 becoming the third golfer in history to win the Career Grand Slam, together with his efforts through the Gary Player Foundation.
Gary Player said: “I have found that the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others does not thrust itself upon us, but we do not need to look hard for it, either. When you spot the chance to give back to the world, act on it. You will have made life better. For others and for yourself.
“When I die, I will create another foundation in heaven.”
Sgwili Gumede, chairman of the sport industry group said: “Gary Player is a remarkable sportsperson who has tirelessly contributed to the development of the sport industry internationally. Over and above this, through his foundation he has also touched and changed many lives for the better throughout the world. It is on this basis that he is truly deserving of this accolade. It is a true honour to recognise him with this coveted award.”
