Sierra Leone’s junior wrestler, Foday Kargbo was the only Sierra Leonean to walk away with a medal at the just concluded African Cadet and Junior championships held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
Kargbo battled in the 79kg freestyle category in which Oussama Abdellaoui of Algeria walked away with the gold medal while Nigeria’s Ebiboloukemi Clarkson settled for the silver.
He said: “Foday got bronze in 79kg junior category in freestyle and he and Medo have been invited to a training camp for 3 weeks after the championship in Bayelsa state here in Nigeria and it is sponsored by the United World Wrestling.
On his team’s performance, the Wrestling President said: “The juniors were very impressive. They would have done a lot better had it not been for the long travel by road to get to Port Harcourt. Imagine how much power they lost. The seniors for whatever reason lacked motivation. Their performance was honestly lackluster.”
Over 250 age-level wrestlers from 14 nations competed in this year’s African Championships with Nigeria as the tournament host finishing at the top of the medal table.
