Aarhus, Denmark, April 6, 2017 - FIVB Secretary General Fernando Lima promoted the significant evolution of volleyball and the great success of the sport at Rio 2016 during a MediaAccord IF media presentation on Wednesday at the SportAccord Convention 2017 in Aarhus, Denmark.
During his presentation, Lima provided an insight into the journey that the FIVB went on in the run up to Rio 2016 as it looks to achieve its vision of becoming the number one family sport. The FIVB introduced exciting innovations, harnessing the latest sports technology to enhance sports presentation and create a more meaningful connection with fans and viewers. This included light shows, music and specific choreographed actions for fans to act out in response to specific moments in the match like the ‘monster block’. The FIVB also introduced the challenge system to guarantee that matches were not decided by human error but gave athletes the chance to play a greater role in the matches.
Lima said: "We wanted to turn fan experience into active engagement and ensure that fans were at the very heart of the match. We are fortunate in volleyball that we have a lot of breaks and a lot of opportunities for fans to make noise which we could take advantage of. From a viewer point of view we also ensured that we were properly capturing the great action and establishing a connection between the athletes and the fans so that we create and celebrate the stars of our sport. These changes resulted in fantastic results at the Olympic Games in Rio. But we know there is a lot more for us to do and we are committed to improving fan engagement even more during our upcoming FIVB events.
Lima also took part in a ‘Ask the Experts’ panel discussion following his presentation where he was joined by sports industry leaders for an interactive Q&A.
