As part of FIFA’s dedicated initiatives to tackle match manipulation around the world, a FIFA mission led by FIFA’s Director of Security Ralf Mutschke is set to visit Sierra Leone in the coming weeks to meet with the President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Isha Johansen, as well as with key governmental officials.

The upcoming trip underlines FIFA’s continued commitment to assisting the SLFA in its fight against corruption and match manipulation. FIFA will share its knowledge and expertise with the SLFA and provide it with support and assistance in its ongoing investigations and in establishing its own integrity programme.

Speaking about his upcoming visit to Sierra Leona Mutschke said: “While it’s the responsibility of the SLFA and the Sierra Leonean authorities to tackle match manipulation matters at local level, FIFA is dedicated to providing support on this issue to the SLFA as we do with all of our other member associations.

"We also continue to look at preventative measures as a sustainable solution to combat the global match manipulation problem. We welcome the efforts currently being undertaken by the SLFA. Match manipulation is a global problem that requires a coordinated response by all stakeholders involved in football.”

Over the past years FIFA has worked closely with its member associations around the world to tackle match manipulation. As part of a ten-year programme in collaboration with INTERPOL, regional workshops involving key stakeholders are being held all over the globe and e-learning programmes are helping to educate players, coaches and referees about the dangers of match manipulation to help them avoid becoming victims of this threat to the integrity of  football.

Other initiatives spearheaded by FIFA to combat match manipulation include the signing of an Integrity Declaration by officials, monitoring of the international betting markets via FIFA’s subsidiary Early Warning System (EWS) and setting up an e-learning ethics tool, an integrity hotline and-mail address as well as a confidential reporting system. Furthermore, FIFA issued Specific Recommendations to Combat Match Manipulation to all of its 209 member associations in May 2014 whilst a joint campaign with Interpol and FIFPro to fight match manipulation was launched in October 2014.
