LOME (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women 2016) – Togolese champions Etoile Filante on Wednesday earned their first-ever qualification ticket for the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) 2016 thanks to an 86-80 overtime triumph over STT SC of Niger.
Playing in front of their home crowd, Etoile Filante needed extra five minutes to see off a determined Nigerien side.
It was Etoile Filante's second win in as many games against STT SC in the tournament - following their 73-50 success in the first round.
The home side found themselves struggling as the visitors stepped on the court determined to change the course of the Qualifiers.
However, Samiya Pindra wasn't prepared to disappoint the home crowd as she tied the contest at 73-73 later in the regulation.
STT SC took over the opening 10 minutes with a 15-14 led, but they went for break trailing 30-27.
The third quarter saw both teams tied three times before Etoile Filante outscored STT SC 20-19 heading to the final quarter.
With six lead changes in the final quarter, Pindra hit a shot that kept the Togolese in contention as the game went for overtime.
Powered by a tireless home support Etoile Filante inflicted the final blow to secure the historic result.
Although STT SC's Aissata Tahirou recorded a tournament-high 42 points, that wasn't good enough to rescue the Nigeriens from elimination.
Komla Gadegbekou, the head-coach of Etoile Filante admitted that it was a tough game and that forced them to dig deeper to win at the end of the day.
“The game was very difficult for us because STT SC played better than in our previous encounter. They kept us on our toes throughout the game but I’m glad we eventually won. Our next line of action is to prepare for the final round in Mozambique''.
