The Sport Industry Personality of the Year category is a new award for 2017, and it was decided by the industry via an online voting system. The nominees had to have raised the profile of the sport industry in a manner that demonstrates innovation, leadership, strategy, relevance and significant positive impact.
While 2015 was a prelude, 2016 became a true dawn. Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka was awarded a World Tour license to race all the premier races around the world. Returning to the Tour they hoped for another stage win. They won five – which is the most stage wins any team achieved in 2016. Africa’s Team was officially competing on the highest level of the sport. All because someone dared to dream and guided by his conviction; a belief that the bicycle will change this continent.
More success has been achieved by getting more people on bicycles across the African continent with charity partner Qhubeka – which is a core part of the team’s objectives, “to ride for a higher purpose”.
Douglas Ryder and his team, are a brilliant example of what can be achieved with an intense quantum of commitment and perseverance – even with the odds firmly stacked against them. Just to ride in the Tour de France was a major achievement. Throughtout this development, Douglas and his team have remained humble and focused which is testament to his character.
Speaking after receiving his award, Doug commented “Our team has grown considerably. Yesterday, while I was in South Africa the team won 2 stages on different tours, in Italy and Norway! We believe there is lots more to come from this team and are excited for the Tour de France”.
