KIGALI (FIBA Africa U18 Championship) – The Democratic Republic of Congo have qualified for the last eight at the ongoing FIBA Africa U18 Championship in Kigali despite an 83-75 defeat to Angola.
Patrick Mwamba led all scorers with 26 points, Philippe Kasereka added 23 for the tournament debutants, but despite their tremendous effort, the Angolans improved their record to 4-0.
Although the Pharaohs defeated Tunisia 73-52, they needed to play their very best to secure their fourth win in as many games.
Early in the day, another tournament debutant Uganda clinched their first win in the competition history by beating Benin 83-57.
While Uganda improved their record to 1-3, Benin are yet to win a game despite putting up a fight.
For the Ugandans, the win comes after three straight games. Nick Natuhereza’s side described the win as a moment of pride.
In the Group A first game of the day, Cote d’Ivoire sealed a place in the Quarter-Finals by beating Gabon 77-68.
Adama Camara sparked the Ivoirians with a team-high 22 points and nine rebounds.
Later in the day, Mali recalled everyone that came to Kigali on a mission. They became the only undefeated team in Group A thanks to a 72-68 win over Algeria in a tightly contested game.
The West Africans had Ousmane Traore and Ibrahim Doumbia to thank for a dominant presence in the paint.
Meanwhile, Algeria proved a tough opponent to beat.
