The Mitchum Buffalo City Surf Pro, presented by Reef Wetsuits, takes place from April 13 – 15 at Nahoon Reef and will feature an athlete area, managed by Mitchum, where surfers can rel.ax and “keep cool” before their heats.
The addition of the “Mitchum on the Move” to the series adds an additional opportunity for surfers to really go for it while demonstrating their ability to stay cool under pressure and earn some cash in the process.
The two male and female surfers who demonstrate a cool head under pressure the best by impressing judges with an outstanding come-from-behind score or by landing an amazing air during the latter part of a heat to push up their score will each walk away with R2 000 at each of the four CSS events and the Port Alfred Town Classic and R5 000 each at the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing, presented by Hurley in June in Nelson Mandela Bay.
“We think this is a truly exciting addition to the City Surf Series from Mitchum,” explained Accelerate Sport CEO, Edward Gregory.
“One of the aims of our series has always been to develop South African surfers’ ability to perform under pressure and this will seem them rewarded further should they do so, I look forward to some exciting endings!”
In only its second year, the QS rated City Surf Series, is South Africa’s premier surfing series with six events, culminating in the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing, presented by Hurley. The series runs over a period of three months between April and June in different cities along the coastline including Durban, Buffalo City, Port Alfred, Nelson Mandela Bay and Cape Town.
The big news about this year’s series is the upgrading of the Volkswagen SA Open of Surfing women’s event to a QS3000, making it the biggest women’s QS in Africa and hoping to attract some of the world’s best ahead of the debut of the women’s Championship Tour (CT) event in JBay a week later. The Nelson Mandela Bay Pro men’s event has also been upgraded to a QS1500 to start the CSS on a high.
Each of the five CSS events will feature QS rated men’s, women’s junior men and junior women’s competitions, Surfing South Africa (SSA) longboard men and women and SUP men and women’s categories.
