Organisers of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and sportscotland aim to empower a new generation of sporting stars by distributing over £600,000 of sports equipment used at the event to facilities around the country.

As part of the Glasgow 2014 legacy plan, all 32 local authorities in Scotland will receive an allocation of over 5,000 items through sportscotland’s Active Schools Network. This will include the likes of rugby balls, netballs, hockey balls, water bottles, whistles, stop watches, and more.

In addition the national agency for sport, sportscotland which is managing the process in partnership with Glasgow 2014, has also arranged for larger sports items to go to clubs and sports facilities. This is being allocated across 13 Sports Governing Bodies, 30 clubs and 13 facilities / trusts.

The Sport Governing Bodies will receive over £200,000 of equipment, with another £200,000 going to the clubs and facilities. Separately £200,000 of weightlifting and powerlifting equipment will go to the sportscotland Institute of Sport to upgrade and replace existing items. The Active Schools Network allocation is valued at over £15,000.

A key role of the Glasgow 2014 Sport Operations team was to identify more than 300,000 individual sport specific equipment items required to stage each of the 17 Games sports. This was a significant project in terms of coordinating the purchase, hire or shared use of items from around the world and then working with key stakeholders including sportscotland to ensure distribution across Scotland after the Games.

SPAR Protea coach Elize Kotze remains upbeat about South Africa’s prospects at the world championships in Singapore next year, despite the disappointing sixth place finish at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Speaking on the opening day of the SPAR National Netball Championships in Cape Town on Monday, Kotze said her goal had been to reach the semi finals of the Commonwealth Games.

“We were playing the best netball teams in the world, and we believed we could challenge for the medal. I still believe we can do it at the world championships next year. We have beaten England and Jamaica in the past and I am very positive we can do it again,” she stated.

“We will have to plan very carefully between now and the world championships and make sure we have the right players, the right mental attitude and the physicality to compete with the top teams,” added Kotze.

Double Olympian Cronje and Robinson were unable to play, leaving South Africa down to only three field players on the rolling subs bench compared to India’s five, which turned out to be a massive disadvantage.

V.R Raghunath (3min) and Rupinder Singh (9th min) both nailed down successful penalty corners to put India 2-0 up before Ramandeep Singh (22nd)and S.V Sunil (26th) scored from field play for the 4-0 half time score.

ATHLETES and spectators are sampling some of Scotland’s best food - as the Commonwealth Games showcase the nation’s larder.

All caterers appointed by Glasgow 2014 have signed up to the Commonwealth Games Food Charter – the first of its kind in Scotland - which highlights the importance of where food is from and how it has been produced.

One of Glasgow 2014’s obligations is to stage a Games with responsible environmental and sustainability standards. It aims to minimise its impact on the environment and seek opportunities that will enhance the environment. The charter puts the focus firmly on sourcing local food, where possible, from sustainable and traceable sources.

Glasgow 2014 produced the Food Charter to demonstrate its commitment to taking proper account of the sustainability of food provided at the Games. Glasgow 2014 also aims to promote healthy living, and will do this via the provision of a variety of authentic foods, including healthier options.

The 6500 sportsmen and women and officials at the 2014 Athletes’ Village can enjoy a range of quality produce such as Scottish salmon and  Arbroath Smokies, shortbread from Inverness and jam from the Highlands, Black face lamb from Argyll and beef from Lanarkshire, strawberries from Angus, yoghurt from Wigtownshire and ice cream from Arran, Dunshire Blue Cheese from Lanarkshire and cured bacon from Dumfrieshire.
