Forget Football or Soccer as Americans call it or the Confederation of African Football, Yaya Toure or Didier Drogba the biggest sports brand in Africa currently is Blessing Okagbare; the African Women’s 100 meters Record Holder, Gold, Silver and Bronze Medalist in the Long Jump, 100 and 200 meters.

She is the Usain Bolt of the African continent. She is bar none the biggest focus of African athletics with exactly a week and a half to go to the Scotland Commonwealth Games, and a year to the next IAAF World Athletics Championship in Beijing China and 2 years to the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

An erstwhile young lady from the small town of Sapele in the Delta State of Nigeria, Blessing carries Nigerian athletics and that of the African continent on her shoulders literally like no other athlete. She came to prominence in the Track & Field World at the collegiate level when she conquered the NCAA in the long Jump and 100 meters in 2010 for University of Texas at El Paso and has never looked back since.

She is as recognizable a face for African sports as Didier Drogba or Yaya Toure is and to top it off she is an intelligent college educated lady that is a dream spokesperson for corporate sponsors who are currently flooding the African continent.

With the just concluded world cup in Brazil, African Football stars failed to measure up and that has significantly damaged most of their brands save for the few who ply their craft in the English Premier League that will be salvaged due to the EPL’s spectacular marketing strategy. The above fact that football even though is the most beloved sports on the continent followed closely by Track & Field has lost some of its luster due to the dismal showing of Africa’s representatives at the 2014 Brazil World Cup opens the door widely for a global stars and Icon like Blessing Okagbare as a standard bearer for sporting excellence on the African Continent

Currently ranked in the top 5 of women sprinters in the 100 & 200 meters and the long Jump globally the next two years could be a bonanza for companies and corporations looking to find a sports star with mass appeal to bank on to take their message and brand to the masses as we head into the Rio Olympics in Brazil and Blessing Okagbare is that choice.

Blessing is currently heading the Nigerian delegation to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland slated for July 22nd - August 8th 2014 and will then head to Marrakech Morocco for the African Athletics Championships, sometime in late August.
