Senegal, losing finalists at the last edition in Seychelles in 2015, humbled islanders Cape Verde 7-2 away at the Santa Maria Beach on Sal Island on Saturday.
Ghana’s Black Sharks proved too strong for their Kenyan hosts handing them a 10-3 drubbing in Mombasa. Richard Osa was the hero for the visitors scoring four goals and Alfred Torsu firing a hat-trick. Huseini Mohamed scored a brace before Michael Sema completed the rout with Modi Hassan taking credit for Kenya’s three goals.
Cote d’Ivoire, semi-finalists in Seychelles last year outclassed Tanzania 7-3 at the Karume Memorial Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Striker Assouan Kablan scored four goals in the opening 11 minutes before Kablan Frederic, Daniel N’guessan and Fabien-Sola Djere each found target to wrap up victory. The homers took consolation in a goal each by Samwel Opanga, Ally Abdalah and Rolland Kessy to reduce the deficit.
The second leg matches will take place on the weekend of 16-18 September 2016 with the winners joining Egypt, Libya and Morocco, who qualified after opponents Uganda, Liberia and Sudan withdrew.
The final tournament will be held from 13-18 December 2016 in Lagos, Nigeria.
