Cllr Nhlapo was elected unopposed during the Special Municipal Council sitting on the 2nd July 2014.
The election of Cllr Nhlapo follows the resignation of the Cllr Freddy Hlungwane.
To this end the municipality welcomes the Mayor, together with the new Speaker Cllr Spando Maluleka and the Chief Whip Mathilda Radebe.

As a municipality we believe the election of Cllr Nhlapo as the new Mayor will accelerate service delivery and good governance in Bela Bela.
We also believe that his election to the Office of the Mayor, will not in any way, be hampered by his position as the Vice President of the South African Football Association in serving the community of Bela Bela, as there is no conflict of interest or contradictions in the two positions.
It is worth noting that Cllr Nhlapo served as Executive Committee member of Council, and as Chairperson of Finance portfolio, whilst a Vice President of SAFA.
While the position of the Mayor is full-time, his position as the Vice President of SAFA is part-time and therefore Mayor Nhlapo will continue to perform the two positions as mandated by the collectives of both the African National Congress and SAFA.
Cllr Nhlapo has, since his youth days, been an activist in both politics and sport development and continues to provide leadership and serve his community and the nation to the best of his abilities.
The municipality views the positions as an added advantage to the development of sport in Bela Bela and the nation.
As the Mayor of Bela Bela, Cllr Nhlapo will be leading and championing local sport development, establishment of sport clubs, upgrading of sport facilities and progressive local youth structures within our municipality.
The Mayor will also be using sport development to champion the cause against substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, illiteracy and other social ills affecting the youth and broader society.
