LA LAGUNA (Basketball Champions League) - Sidigas Avellino charged back from a 14-point deficit in the first half and won 78-66 at Group D leaders Iberostar Tenerife on Tuesday to leave first place unsettled for at least another week.
Beaten at home, 76-75, earlier in the season to Iberostar Tenerife, Avellino were behind 44-35 at half-time. But Stefano Sacripanti's men came out strong in the third quarter with a much tougher defense and a commitment to pass the ball inside on offense. They took a 51-49 lead when Marques Green drained a 3-pointer late in the frame.
Taqwa Pinero answered with a shot from the arc to put the hosts back in front, only for Green to score with another jumper and put the visitors on top for good. The Italian club led for the remainder of the contest, outscoring the hosts 25-14 over the last 10 minutes.
For the winners, Joe Ragland had 19 points and 5 assists and Kyrylo Fesenko poured in 13 points and collected 14 rebounds. Fesenko had one of the plays of the game with an alley-oop jam.
Adonis Thomas also weighed in with 17 points for Sidigas Avellino, who had a section of fans cheering them on loudly from start to finish. The club had expected even more fans to be in the Canary Islands to support them but bad weather prevented them from traveling.
"This one was for the people of Avellino and all the fans," Green said.
Marius Grigonis, who poured in 11 of his team-high 14 points for Iberostar Tenerife in the first half, said: "We started good but didn't finish that strong. We did stupid mistakes like out of frustration, probably."
