BENGALURU (FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2017) - Unlikely hero Saki Mizushima stepped up big time and led Japan to a thrilling 74-73 victory in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2017 Final over Australia.

It was a historic win for Japan as it is the first with new entrants Australia and New Zealand in the fold.

ABUJA (FIBA AfroBasket Women 2017) -  In his return at the helm of Nigeria women's team, Sam Vincent has named 29 players for the FIBA Women's AfroBasket 2017 training camp. 

The American, who coached the former African champions at the 2004 Athens Olympics, is currently hosting a training camp with 14 USA-based Nigerian players in Florida while his assistant Peter Ahmedu is working with 15 players in Lagos, Nigeria as this video shows.

SPIKES, the official Skype Bot for the world of international track and field athletics, is launched today to mark ‘One Week To Go’ to the start of the IAAF World Championships London 2017 (4-13 August).

The bot, which was developed in collaboration with Skype, will go live directly and cover every angle of the World Championships in London including the athletes, the event disciplines and results during the 10 days of competition in the stadium and on the streets of London.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) have announced a series of fan engagement, youth development, community service, business and sports medicine events in the week leading up to the NBA Africa Game 2017, the league’s second game in Africa, which will take place Saturday 5th August at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa.
​
The events include an expanded NBA Africa Game Fan Zone, the first NBA Africa Innovation Summit and Jr. NBA Africa Festival, a sports medicine symposium, and a series of events to leave a lasting legacy in the community.

Shane Kluivert, the nine-year-old son of retired Dutch soccer international Patrick Kluivert, has signed an endorsement deal with Nike.

The agreement sees the Paris Saint-Germain academy star become the youngest European athlete to be snapped up by the American sportswear giant, which has a talent identification department dedicated to scouting promising young players.

​Serbian trainer Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has terminated his contract as head coach of Uganda after more than four years in charge.
 
Sredojevic who guided the Cranes to the finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon early this year, a first for the East African country since 1978, officially called time on his Uganda role at a press conference in Kampala on Saturday.

​Vienna, Austria, July 29, 2017 – Seven countries are making their FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships debuts in the 2017 edition of the tournament, in Vienna. Some of them, though, had tougher paths in the tournament as they were drawn to face some of the best teams in the world in their first matches in the Danube Island.
 
That was definitely the case for Mozambique’s Aldevino Nguvo/Justino Tovela and Sierra Leone’s Abubakarr Kamara/Lombie Patrick, who booked their places in the tournament through the African qualifications and started their first-ever World Championships campaigns taking on the teams that played in the gold medal match of Rio 2016 Olympic Games last year.

Detroit Pistons gain new jersey sponsor

NBA basketball franchise the Detroit Pistons has agreed a jersey sponsorship deal with Michigan-headquartered financial services company Flagstar Bank.

The multi-year deal also names Flagstar as the official banking and mortgage sponsor of the team. Flagstar’s branding will feature on the left chest area of the Pistons’ jerseys.
​
Flagstar will also serve as the presenting sponsor of the Detroit Pistons Math Hoops community relations platform.

MIES (FIBA 3x3) - 3x3 basketball reached another social media milestone as the FIBA 3x3 YouTube channel reached 50 million all-time views.

The channel grew at a torrid pace in 2017. More than 18 million of these views were recorded this year. The 2017 figures are already 46% better than those of the entire year of 2016. Many high-caliber 3x3 events are yet to be played this season, including the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup and the FIBA 3x3 World Tour (whose second of 7 Masters will be staged in Utsunomiya, Japan, this weekend on July 29-30).
