LUSAKA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - By beating South Africa 91-57 on Wednesday, Angola have qualified for the 16-team FIBA AfroBasket 2017 in Congo-Brazzaville in August.
Although South Africa had a strong opening quarter, it was a matter of time for the Angolans who closed the first half with a comfortable 45-23 lead.
With the win, Angola improved their FIBA Africa Zone 6 Group G record to 3-0 while South Africa dropped to 1-2.
As of 29 March, 12 national teams from all corners of Africa have secured their presence in Congo-Brazzaville in August (19-30).
Teams qualified include Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Morocco, Mozambique, Tunisia, Egypt, Uganda, Angola, Mali and Senegal.
The winner of the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone 4 qualifier, which consists of Cameroon, Chad and Gabon will become the 13th team to qualify for the FIBA Africa's flagship tournament while two tickets will be allocated via a wild card process.
The team that finishes second in the Lusaka regional qualifier will face Zimbabwe - a team that finished second in the FIBA Africa Zone 6 Group H - in the race for the last ticket for the Congo-Brazzaville showpiece. Terms and schedule of that game will be announced at a later date.
