After a year’s hiatus Africa’s first ever and only comprehensive sports magazine has returned with a bang. In this issue of African Sports Monthly we dedicate the front cover to the greatest African that ever lived in Nelson ‘Madiba’ Mandela for his incomparable contribution to Africa especially so in the world of sports. Nelson Mandela died on December 5th 2013 but his legacy in many facets of life, most particularly his recognition of the value of sports within society will forever remain with us in Africa. He stands alone as one of the very few African leaders who knew and saw the true value of sports as a vehicle of social mobilization to achieve a myriad of significant milestones one of which was in uniting South Africa which was at the crossroads to a brutal Civil War back in the mid 1990’s
In our Road to Brazil 2014 series we take a look at the qualified African nations on the lead up to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Our resident writer in Johannesburg, South Africa; Farai Diza, gives an analysis of all five teams and the possible outcomes of each team’s performance in Brazil and our long time writer from Germany; Thomas Meinders, gives us a look at the life of one of the most talented and volatile soccer players in the world in Kevin Prince Boateng in a profile piece about the life and rise of Boateng into the global ranks of great soccer players.
New contributor; Lango Deen Sankoh of the USA interviews the second woman ever elected to lead a national Football Association in the world in Isha Johansen of Sierra Leone to get a bird’s eye view of whats ahead for Sierra Leone football.
One of our writer and contributors from London Mr. Saidu Kaye Sesay looks back at the election of Thomas Bach of Germany into the high profile position of IOC Chief and extends African Sports Monthly’s congratulations to Bach.
Senior African Sports Monthly Writer, Mr Ayodele Odumade of London as usual gives some very thought provoking view about the happenings in the world of sports as it affects Africa. In his piece on this issue he looks at the award of the 20122 FIFA World cup to the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar as well as the seeding system of the FIFA World Cup draw and how it affects African teams.
Our writer from Finland Annimari Korte takes us back to 2013 as she looks back at the happenings for African athletes in Track & Field in the year that’s now behind us.
