Mané Garrincha stadium, the second most expensive stadium in soccer history – second only to Wembley Stadium in London, has found a new use less than a year after hosting the biggest sports tournament in the world.
The 72 000-seater Brazilian stadium cost around £350 million to build. However, with no top division teams based in Rio de Janeiro, since the World Cup finished last June and with only a few friendly matches for the international side happening at the stadium, it has been difficult for Mané Garrincha to reach anywhere near full capacity.
To meet monthly running costs officials have turned the outside into a bus depot with over 400 vehicles now stored there.
