Wayde Van Niekerk of South Africa broke the African Record and won the 400 meters at the Birds Nest stadium in China ahead of two world champions in Lashawn Merritt of the USA and Kirani James of Grenada, a feat that made him the 4th fastest in the event of all time.
Running out of Lane 6 Van Niekerk gave chase to Lashawn Merritt of the USA running out of lane 7 who went out with a bang and led the race for more than two thirds of the race. Niekerk now known for his strength in the final 100 meters then changed into another gear coming out of the curve into the homestretch taking control of the race and never looked back.

He ran the race in 43.48 seconds breaking and setting not only South Africa’s record but the continental record for Africa as well. His time is now the world’s leading time.
The young South African will now head into the Rio Olympics as the favorite to win Gold.
Wayde Van Niekerk was eventually rushed to the hospital after the race when he collapsed from exhaustion following his win.
