In a press statement, the SLVA President Christopher John said out of the seven-man delegation who attended the tournament, Turay was the only individual to defect from the squad.
The Swiss authorities have already placed a 72-hour moratorium when she would be declared wanted. Until then, investigations continue and we shall keep the public informed through the ministry of sports of any development in Switzerland and here in Sierra Leone, the release reads.
Sierra Leone’s male and female teams were knocked out of the tournament last Friday after they failed to get past their opponents in Pool E and according to the SLVA president, as per FIVB relegation teams who are knocked out of pool play can only be accommodated at the competition venue at their own cost.
He said: “Since there was no provision for such on the travel budget of the delegation, arrangement were made to enable the delegation to fly back home on the next available flight which was on Saturday May 14.”
Unlike athletics, Turay’s defection is the first ever case the Sierra Leone Volleyball Association has recorded and the Association has promised to clamp down on the act immediately.
