The Sierra Leone Athletics Association which had been instructed by the World’s Athletics governing body, the IAAF to hold a congress and elect a new executive by the end of the year (2015) took a major step back on Tuesday December 15, 2015 when ongoing proceedings at a scheduled congress devolved into violence.
On Tuesday December 15th 2015 the SLAA Executive did convene the said congress to elect a new Executive and as the proceedings ensued the Minister of Sports is said to have entered the facility and upon entering proceeded to disqualify Rtd Major Palor Conteh from contesting the elections and it was at this time that chaos ensued as the Ex-Military Chief proceeded to confront the Minister but thanks to some furniture and people between them an unfortunate altercation was prevented. Later on however the current Secretary General Dauda Sundufu Sowa is said to have proceeded to try and talk to the Minister and it was during his encounter that it was alleged the Minister and his Guards manhandled him leading to an injury to his face. The alleged assault is said to have been reported to Law enforcement in the country and an investigation with charges to follow is now underway.
First it was the slap heard around the world when the now fired Sierra Leone Football Association President Mrs. Isha Johansen slapped Sierra Leone football legend Mohamed Kallon and the violence in sports administration circles in the country now continues with the injury to the Sierra Leone Secretary General Dauda Sundufu Sowa’s face.
When will the violence stop and when will the bickering over control and turf in sports subside to return the focus of sports in Sierra Leone back to the athletes and a ray of hope given to the youth and future generations of Sierra Leone. Sports administrators are supposed to be serving the interest of the athletes and the nation and not their self-interest and it should not be a place either where national politics is fought.
The country has been through too much in the last couple of decades for it to continue down this path. The President of Sierra Leone needs to seriously look into this matter as sports is the one thing in society along with education that provides a way for many to lift themselves out of poverty. So why are a few individuals destroying the hope of the youth in the nation after so much suffering in the last 25 years … Why!!!
