
In Group B, Burundi and Zanzibar were involved in the early kickoff of the day with the former managing a lone goal victory.
Diidier Kavumbagu ensured an opening win for Burundi when he slotted home a well calculated through ball from Laudit Mavugo just before the break.
Zanzibar will left to rue wasted chances from Ame Ali and Haboub Nadri who only had the Burundi goalie to beat opportunity but failed to convert the chance. He was later replaced by Ibrahim Hamai Amos three minutes from the end.
Burundi coach Alain Niyungeko could not hid his joy as walked to the dressing room following victory in the opening game of the zonal championship.
“We are here as underdogs but we need to make sure we win and we have done it. Let’s wait for the other matches and see what will transpire and pick it from there but so far so good.”
His Zanzibar counterpart Suleiman Hemed expressed disappointment at his charges failure to bury the chances that came their way.
“We missed chances that would have given us three points and we have no one to blame but ourselves” he said.
In the other game, host Ethiopia were humbled by Rwanda 1-0 Tusiengye Janeques free- kick on 68 minutes settled matters.
