Lausanne, Switzerland, June 23, 2015 - The FIVB this week launched the bidding process for the 2017 edition of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. As this is the first time a bidding process has been introduced for the competition, FIVB President Dr Ary Graca took part in a Q&A session to explain why.
Q: Why has the FIVB decided to change the process for this competition?
There are several reasons why the FIVB has decided to launch a bidding process for the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.
The move to a bidding process is also a result of the constant growth of interest in hosting FIVB events. A bidding process subsequently is the natural acknowledgment of the interest expressed by cities and nations wishing to host events and of their passion for volleyball.
Launching an effective bidding process is also one of the FIVB’s 9 strategic goals for the growth of volleyball worldwide. Our goal is to have standardized bidding procedures and processes for all relevant FIVB events in place by the year 2018. The tender for the Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2017 is a first step in this direction and we are pleased to have reached this milestone.
Q: What does the FIVB want to achieve with this new bidding process?
The purpose of this process is to select the best country or city to host the event and to open up this opportunity to the 221 national federations which are members of the FIVB. In addition, we would like to bring our events to the attention of cities, tourism boards, local and regional governments, private promoters or media who are yet to organise FIVB competitions.
Q: How does a city show its interest as a host?
Interested parties will need to submit their bids to host the 2017 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships before July 15. Bidders should contact the FIVB for information about the procedure to follow.
The contact address is the following:

Q: What are the requirements for bidding to host an FIVB event?
Benefits and requirements are outlined in the official Hosting Requirements document. The successful bidder will be evaluated on the way he responds to these requirements and will be selected based on a range of criteria, including a focus on financial guarantees, demonstrable experience organising events of this scale as well as a strong commitment to the FIVB’s core values. We want to make sure that the best possible city is selected to host each FIVB competition and the bidding process has been set up to make sure this happens.
Q: What does this mean for the FIVB?
This is a sign that the FIVB is committed to the ongoing development of world volleyball. This year, we have more cities than ever before looking to host our events, as volleyball fans around the world aim to bring their sport to their nation.
It is also fantastic that we can prove our commitment to transparency and good governance, which are core values of the FIVB and the wider Olympic family.
