
Mutasim, also president of the Sudan Football Association pocketed six votes out of ten beating closest contender, Lawrence Mulindwa from Uganda who garnered three votes. Vincent Nzamwita from Rwanda polled one vote whilst a fourth candidate, Juneidi Basha of Ethiopia withdrew before voting began.
“Mutasim is a visionary man who is capable of leading the region to a greater development. I am very proud that I had given my best in the last eight years I served as CECAFA president” said Tenga adding he will always be available for advice and consultations in the future.
Tenga took over from the late Dennis Obua of Uganda in December 2007.
Mutasim on his part said his experience with the SFA will be vital in his new role as head of the zonal union.
He promised that his rein will see the CECAFA region make amendments to recover from past losses to culminate in more football progress than ever before.
Four executive committee members namely Abdiqani Said Arab [Somalia], Alei Ghabur Goc [South Sudan], Souleiman Hassan Waberi [Djibouti] and Habimona Aimable of Burundi were also elected, whilst long standing Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye [Kenya] continues in his role.
