Drogba treated a capacity crowd of 20,801 at Stade Saputo to a breathtaking performance in his first career MLS start. The Impact forward recorded a hat trick as Montreal topped the Chicago Fire, 4-3, and retained grip of the sixth and final Eastern Conference playoff slot. The Ivorian international becomes the first player to register a hat trick within his first two MLS appearances.
With Montreal trailing 3-2 midway through the second half, Drogba took matters into his own hands and propelled the Impact to a crucial home win. In the 61st minute, Ignacio Piatti quickly played a free kick into the box to an unmarked Drogba, who powered a left-footed shot into the back of the net (watch goal). Less than five minutes later, the 6’2” forward smashed a volley off a cross from Calum Mallace that knocked Johnson off balance. Drogba followed through on the rebound and tapped it home with his head, completing a ‘perfect’ hat trick (scored with his left foot, right foot, and head) (watch goal).
The Montreal Impact returns to MLS action on Saturday, September 12 when the club visits the LA Galaxy at the StubHub Center at 10:30 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE).
