NEW YORK (Friday, October 2, 2015) – Montreal Impact forward Didier Drogba was voted Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month by fans on MLSsoccer.com for the month of September for the 2015 MLS season.
Drogba has proven to be an unstoppable force since joining the Montreal Impact this summer, as he is off to one of the fastest starts in MLS history. The former Ivorian international had a September to remember, helping lead the Impact to an unbeaten 4-0-2 record and contributing seven goals and an assist in five starts during the month. Drogba’s seven tallies are a season-high in 2015 for most goals scored in a month. The Impact (12-11-6, 42 points, East #6) are now in prime position to book a ticket to the Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs.
Drogba turned in another impressive performance on Sept. 19 in the Impact’s 3-0 victory over the New England Revolution, recording a deflected free-kick goal in the 60th minute (watch goal) and an assist on Dilly Duka’s tally in the 76th minute (watch assist). In Montreal’s 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire on September 23, Drogba got on the score sheet again in the 39th minute when he powered home Nigel Reo-Coker’s cross into the back of the net (watch goal).
Drogba finished out his incredible month with a brace in Montreal’s 2-0 victory over D.C. United on September 26. The Chelsea icon sent a sublime curling free-kick into the top corner in the fourth minute (watch goal) and then finished past Hamid after a remarkable run that left defender Steve Birnbaum on the floor (watch goal).
The Montreal Impact return to MLS action on Saturday when the club travels to the Citrus Bowl to take on Orlando City SC at 7:30 p.m. ET (MLS LIVE).
