Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has confirmed that he has been appointed assistant coach of Belgian topflight side Sint-Truidense.
“Yes it's official; I’m joining the STVV family. Look forward to achieving memorable things here. Thanks everyone,” McCarthy tweeted.
The 37-year-old, who is still completing his UEFA A licence, was unveiled alongside the club’s new head coach Chris O’Loughlin on Tuesday. McCarthy, Bafana's record scorer with 32 goals, won the European Champions League with FC Porto in 2004, while he also featured for Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United. McCarthy retired from playing two years ago following a stint with Orlando Pirates.
