The first legs of the Conference Semifinals were played on Sunday, November 1, with three road teams picking up what could be important road goals.
In the Eastern Conference, the New York Red Bulls shut out D.C. United 1-0 behind a goal from captain Dax McCarty at RFK Stadium. North of the border the Montreal Impact overcame a goal by Columbus Crew SC forward Federico Higuain with tallies from captain Patrice Bernier and second-half substitute Johan Venegas to claim the 2-1 home victory.
In the Western Conference, the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC played to a scoreless draw in front of a sold-out crowd at Providence Park. In the last match of the day, FC Dallas took an early lead with a goal from Colombian Fabian Castillo, but Seattle Sounders FC came back with second-half goals from Austrian-international Andreas Ivanschitz and a late game-winning free kick by U.S. Men’s National Team star Clint Dempsey to take the 2-1 lead going into the second leg.
The Conference Semifinals and Conference Championships are two-leg, aggregate goal series. If the series is tied after two legs, the team with the most away goals will advance. If the total goals and away goals are equal, then an additional 30 minutes (two 15 minute periods) of added extra time will be played in its entirety. Away goals do not count in extra time. If the score is still tied after extra time, the match will be decided by kicks from the penalty spot in accordance to FIFA’s Laws of the Game.
