
The Brazilian Ministry of Sport has released new images and a video showing the progress being made Barra Olympic Park and Deodoro Olympic Park, the two largest venue clusters for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Captured in August, the images show the Olympic Parks taking shape as preparations enter the final straight with just under one year until the opening ceremony. The Brazilian federal government website also provided information on construction progress, based on information provided by the Rio city government, which is responsible for the works.
Carioca Arena 1
Sports: basketball, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby
Current situation – The roof has been finished and work is being finalised on the permanent stands. Work on internal walls, elevators and changing rooms is ongoing.
Carioca Arena 2
Sports: judo (Olympic), Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, boccia
Current situation – The roof has been finished, as has the installation of the natural lighting system, drainage, elevators and construction of the façade. The temporary seating has also been installed and work continues on the flooring and internal walls.
Carioca Arena 3
Sports: fencing, taekwondo, judo (Paralympic)
Current situation – The roof has been finished, as has the work on the natural lighting system and elevators. Guard rails, internal walls and temporary seating are being installed.
Olympic Tennis Centre
Sports: tennis, wheelchair tennis and football 5-a-side
Current situation – Construction of the main concrete bowl has been completed and work on the metallic roof is in the final stages. The second layer of asphalt on the main court has been laid, leaving only the painting of the court.
Rio Olympic Velodrome
Sports: track cycling (Olympic and Paralympic)
Current situation – The metallic structure and concrete levels are being mounted and access ramps are being finalised. Work on the plumbing system is progressing well.
Future Arena
Sports: handball, goalball
Current situation – The main structure is completed. Owing to the venue’s temporary nature, the seats will be rented and installed closer to the test event next year. The venue has already staged a goalball match and after the Games will be dismantled and its parts used to construct four public schools.
Olympic Aquatics Stadium
Sports: swimming (Olympic and Paralympic), water polo
Current situation – The metallic frame of the stands has been completed, while work on the roof and inner areas are ongoing. Construction of the competition pool is in an advanced stage.
Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre (existing venue)
Sports: diving, synchronised swimming
Current situation – Work is ongoing on the warm-up pool, as is the renovation of the changing rooms and medical centre. The warm water piping in one of the competition pools has been replaced and is being tested.
Rio Olympic Arena (existing venue)
Sports: gymnastics (artistic, rhythmic, trampoline), wheelchair basketball
Current situation – The venue is ready and only requires some adaptations, which will start later this year.
DEODORO OLYMPIC PARK
Olympic Shooting Centre (existing venue)
Sports: shooting (Olympic and Paralympic)
Current situation – Among the areas being renovated are the external facade, bathrooms, public walkway, electric installations and stands. Construction of the new shotgun ranges has been completed.
Deodoro Aquatics Centre (existing venue)
Sports: modern pentathlon (swimming)
Current situation – Impermeability testing has been completed as has concreting of the support buildings. Work on re-tiling the pool is ongoing.
Olympic Equestrian Centre (existing venue)
Sports: equestrian (Olympic and Paralympic)
Current situation – The cross country course was used for the test event and extra sections are being finalised. The renovation of the covered ring and one of the training areas has been finished, while work on three more training courses is being finalised.
Olympic Hockey Centre
Sports: hockey
Current situation – The foundations and metal frames of the permanent stands have been completed, while work on the changing rooms is ongoing. Preparation of the bases of pitches one and two and the training field have been completed.
Youth Arena
Sports: modern pentathlon (fencing), women's basketball (first pase), wheelchair fencing
Current situation – Work on the metal structure, roof and pre-moulded stands has been completed. Work is ongoing on the pavements, ramps, floors, changing rooms and technical areas.
Whitewater Stadium
Sports: canoe slalom
Current situation – the concrete structures of the lake, competition and training canals, pumping station and technical building have been completed. Reinforcing and water-proofing of the competition and training canals is being completed, while the pumps are being installed. The pathway linking the venue with the BMX course is in the final phase of completion.
Mountain Bike Centre
Sports: mountain bike
Current situation – Work on the course and grass planting in the common areas are in their final phases. Check out this video of the course designer riding the course.
Deodoro Stadium
Sports: rugby, modern pentathlon (equestrian and combined running/shooting section), football 7-a-side
Current situation – Earthworks are underway on this temporrary venue.
BMX
Sports: BMX cycling
Current situation – The first new venue to be ready in 2015, the BMX course was unveiled last month.
