The world has lost one of the greatest athletes of all time and global Icon in Mohamed Ali on Friday June 3rd 2016. He passed away in Arizona from respiratory complications with family and friends by his side.
Ali is a global legendary figure who stood out as a fighter against social injustice especially at a time when racism and Jim Crow were the order of the day in the USA. He refused to be inducted into the US army to go fight against Vietnam when the Military Draft was instituted back in the 1960’s and for that he lost his boxing license and World Title and was convicted for it. His conviction was later reversed by the US Supreme Court ruling and in a stamen before he headed to Houston Texas for the induction into the Army which he refused to honor he made a statement to the Press asking; "Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs and denied simple human rights?".
Some of his notable quotes are
- “Float Like a Butterfly Sting like a bee” ,
- “He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life”.
He leaves a wife and several kids including the famous Female Boxer Laila Ali who followed in her father’s footsteps and made a name for herself.
