In France there were match-winning goals from Floyd Ayite at Bastia and Cheick Diabate at Bordeaux, and in Italy Jerry Mbakogu scored the winner for Carpi from the penalty spot.
Rudy Gestede (Aston Villa)
The Benin striker scored an equaliser 15 minutes from time for Aston Villa in their 1-1 draw with high-flying Leicester when, after coming on minutes earlier as a substitute, he got away with the ball bouncing off his arm and then benefitted from a Robert Huth clearance that hit him in the groin before his deflected shot found its way into the net for his first goal since September. Unfortunately for Villa, the point gained was not enough to take them off the bottom of the table.
Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City)
He has been having a brilliant season as a key member of Leicester's unexpected push for the Premier League title but last weekend was one to forget for the Algeria winger. Minutes after the Foxes had gone 1-0 up at Villa Park, they were awarded a penalty when his shot was blocked by the sliding Aly Cissokho's raised arm. Despite missing from the spot earlier this month Mahrez took the penalty himself, but his casual strike down the middle was too close to Mark Bunn and the Villa goalkeeper made the save.
Yaya Toure (Manchester City)
The Ivory Coast star suffered the indignity of being dropped to the bench but made his mark when he came on in the second half with a neat piece of play as City's best move of the match led to a third goal, and Sergio Aguero's second of the match, in a 4-0 rout of Crystal Palace.
Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham)
A forceful and aggressive display meant the Senegal star was the pick of West Ham's midfield in their 2-1 loss away to Newcastle. The London club may still have come away with a point if his late header had not been saved by Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot.
Arthur Boka (Malaga)
Ivorian full-back Boka was sent-off for two bookable offences as Malaga's
seven-game unbeaten run in La Liga came to an end in a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla.
Floyd Ayite (Bastia)
Togo international Ayite scored three minutes after half-time to earn Bastia a 1-0 win at home to Montpellier. The winger headed home Florian Marange's cross for his fourth goal of the season.
Cheick Diabate (Bordeaux)
Mali striker Diabate struck the winner for Bordeaux for the second time in as many games as they beat Lille 1-0. The 27-year-old headed home a cross from Tunisian international Wahbi Khazri six minutes into the second half.
Mohamed Salah (Roma)
Coach Luciano Spalletti was back in charge of Roma after the sacking of Rudi Garcia and Salah's performance reflected the general malaise being felt at the Serie A club. The Egyptian winger was far from his best and, after Radja Nainggolan had given Roma a 1-0 lead, spurned the chance to double the hosts' advantage when he hit a wasted shot instead of offering up to Edin Dzeko, who was in a better position. It finished tied at 1-1.
Jerry Mbakogu (Carpi)
Carpi are in a battle against relegation but the league minnows were given a huge boost with a fourth win of the campaign thanks to Mbakogu's second-half penalty. Sampdoria's Joaquin Correa pulled the match level six minutes after Lorenzo Lollo's opener for the hosts, and after a foul in the area Nigerian Mbakogu stepped up to beat Emiliano Viviano in the visiting goal to put Carpi ahead on 55 minutes.
